Day 189 (July 27, 2017)
In today’s issue: Healthcare.
The healthcare debate is coming to a head this week. Just in time for Medicare and Medicaid’s 52nd anniversary.
Here’s what happened so far, and what to expect.
They’ve rejected two major bills that you might have heard of:
- The repeal and replace bill that made headlines after the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said it would lead to 22 million people being uninsured.
- The repeal only bill that would have phased out Obamacare in 2 years without a replacement in its stead.
And on the third day (and possibly last day) of this debate, what’s their fallback? The skinny repeal bill.
GOP leaders are looking to pass a “skinny repeal” bill that would make limited changes to Obamacare. It would likely end the law’s mandate for individuals to buy health insurance and large employers to provide coverage for their workers.
And guess what? No one likes it. No one. Insurance companies don’t. Democrats don’t. AND Republicans don’t.
Hm.. wonder why..
Ah, yes. The whole 26M uninsured if the skinny repeal bill passes is quite terrifying.
Let’s just take a minute to appreciate our fellow Democrats who are resisting this bill, and this debate, so effectively (h/t Topher Spiro).
And then there was this:
Talk about hasty decisions. I think their status, and their reputation is blurring their vision and they aren’t realizing that remaking the “skinny repeal” bill over lunch on the final day of health care deliberations can have tremendous ramifications for MILLIONS of people.
Again, no one supports it! But then why are they moving forward?? Sounds like desperation to me.
It’s just hard to understate how rushed and unprofessional the handling of this bill has been.
And the saga continues: apparently the vote will happen this weekend.
WHYYY
The House has subsequently taken action to ensure that they can vote on the Skinny Repeal bill without holding a conference with the Senate. Reminder: the Senate was hoping for a conference with the House so that the Skinny Repeal bill wouldn’t actually become law. But now that’s gone with the wind. And we’re screwed.
Pressure your local senators. It’s never been as important as it is now. Literally, lives are on the line.
