Day 217 (August 25, 2017)
In today’s issue: Gary Cohn.
Trump’s top economic official went on record in an interview with the Financial Times denouncing Trump’s defense of white supremacists after the deadly protests in Charlottesville.
He spoke about whether he considered resigning after Trump failed to denounce the KKK and neo-nazis, and blamed the violence on “many sides.” Here’s what Gary Cohn, a Jew, said:
Essentially, his logic for not resigning after the man he serves said incredibly offensive things, including things that Cohn took personally, is that resigning would be giving in to the Nazis wishes.
I have a hard time understanding this logic.
Handing it off to Jon Lovett to explain:
Cohn is trying to put a lovely spin on this series of events (protests →violence →Trump’s ignorant comments →Cohn standing by and staying silent). But he failed to realize how weak this makes him look.
He looks like the biggest coward of all. He should defy the Nazis by not supporting the leader who gives them the loudest voice of all. If he truly believes that this administration is not a representation of what he stands for, he should 100% resign.
As a matter-of-fact, White House employees should follow the protocol below:
If Trump, as POTUS, doesn’t reflect your values, demonstrate that by resigning and weakening his influence and power. De-legitimize his stance. THAT’S the way you do it.
As long as people in the Trump administration remain in the administration, they will be the targets of our resistance, as well.
