What to expect this year at the US Open

There are a lot of storylines on and off the court this year, most notable of which is Serena Williams’ last appearance in the US Open after announcing her retirement earlier this year. But there’s a lot more to keep your ears on.

On the women’s side, tennis fans will undoubtedly be focused on WTA first-ranked Iga Swiatek, but according to some commentators and experts, the field really is pretty open. Take Caroline Garcia’s surprising success in the Cincinnati qualifying matches earlier this week. There’s also the rest of the top five — Anett Kontaveit, Maria Sakkari, Paula Badosa, and Ons Jabeur — to be excited for.

As far as the men’s breakdown goes, things seem a bit more straightforward (though with the US Open, nothing really ever is). Modern icons like ATP third-ranked Rafael Nadal and sixth-ranked Novak Djokovic are still forces to be reckoned with, but relative newcomers like first-ranked Daniil Medvedev and second-ranked Alexander Zverev favorites as well.
