In a day where artists of all influences and backgrounds are blending genres together in new, innovative ways, TuneIn’s Anthony Valadez has found an opportunity to select his personal favorites, hits and under-the-radar gems for today’s music fan through Indie, TuneIn’s latest original music station.

Every song is fair game — Valadez promises no genre restrictions, playing limitlessly for listeners who want to go on a musical journey from diverse artists including Sampha, Tom Misch, and Arcade Fire. Indie also features exclusive Fireside Chats, interviews and live recording sessions with emerging and established artists such as Jade Bird, JMSN, Nick Hakim, Damian Marley, and Goapele. We asked Valadez a few questions about this unique music experience.

How did “Indie” come to be?

DJ Reflex [TuneIn’s Head of Music] and I wanted to create something different that goes beyond musical boundaries. I spend probably way too much time exploring music blogs, talking to music lovers and visiting record stores, so music discovery is very important to me. We wanted to give that same experience to the listener.

What makes “Indie” different than other alternative radio stations?

We break rules! Our programming is about curating songs that would not work on radio paired together today, but connects dots to the music lover. These artists get lots of love online, and are celebrated on many blogs. We celebrate them on “Indie” and it’s been great. Or ‘lit,’ as the kids say.

What’s your favorite part about curating the “Indie” station?

Liberation. I get to have a fun time talking on the mic Monday through Friday, 9am to 9pm. I’m surrounded by music from back in the day to current, slept-on gems.

Lastly, why is this station important to you?

Music is important to me. TuneIn has become my online playground. I love that I get to talk to artists and have really personable 1-on-1 conversations. It’s important for me to nerd out on music with diverse artists like Van Hunt or Ty Dolla $ign.
