What to Expect in Your First Year as a Franchisee

It’s never easy to start a business. With a franchise, you have so many benefits. The recognized name and branding are a huge reason to jump in with a franchise. They don’t mean instant success, though, or even a guarantee for success.

So what can you expect in the first year as a franchisee?

The first year of any business requires a great deal of time from the owner. That’s just the truth. You can plan to the best of your abilities, but you’ll still end up working after hours sometimes and getting calls at odd hours. You’ll need to do your best to roll with the punches and try to make time for yourself where and when you can. If you’re taking on a new business, don’t sign up for anything else that year.

Research is good. That being said, you’ll still be learning on the job. There is no amount of reading or asking questions that will fully prepare you for the first year of your business. There is no way to know enough about what’s going to happen.

There is also no amount of preparation that will stop the unexpected from happening. You’ll find the holes in your plans as you move through the first year of your franchise.

You may not see the rewards of your hard work show up immediately. Often, you’ll notice things paying off once enough of your work has built up. Keep going. Success is not guaranteed, which can make this difficult. But it definitely won’t happen if you can’t find a way to believe the work is worth it in the long run.

Unexpected expenses are basically to be expected during your first year as a business owner. Again, no matter how much you prepare for this, you will find yourself surprised with unexpected events and expenses. Do your best to budget extra. Roll with the hits to your budget as they come in.

Trust that while this will be difficult, the best thing you can do is stay calm and trust your instincts as you move forward navigating the first year of your business.
