Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, at USDS Staff Meeting

U.S. Digital Service members join for what we call a tour of duty.

The tour of duty model allows us to bring in folks for term-limited positions to work on building a more awesome government through technology and design. We look for the most tenacious designers, software engineers, product managers, and more, who are committed to untangling, rewiring and redesigning critical government services. You’ll join a team of the most talented technologists from across the private sector and government.

USDS Administrator, Matt Cutts, spoke with Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, about our tour of duty model and Microsoft being a leader in civic service leave programs. Kurt DelBene, Chief Digital Officer and Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy, Core Services Engineering and Operations at Microsoft, briefly left in 2014 for a short-term assignment to help President Obama make improvements to Healthcare.gov, the enrollment website for the Affordable Care Act.

I felt compelled to use my skills to serve our country, and I encourage others to do the same through our civic leave program. This program is available to current employees and enables them to use their skills to serve their country, while offering a way to bring fresh perspective back to Microsoft. — Kurt DelBene
