The Virtual Reality Battle Is Heating Up
The current leader of virtual reality is Meta, and the lead is growing larger. Meta’s move from PCVR to standalone VR is paying off, and their next VR headset looks to make a bigger jump. The rumor is that Apple is looking to jump into the market and compete against Meta. Apple is known for jumping into markets and taking over through innovation and creative marketing. There are three main reasons I believe Apple can compete and win a virtual reality battle with Meta.
Apple Silicon
Apple’s homemade chips have always given it an advantage against Android smartphones. Apple has now begun to make chips for its computers too. The results so far have been amazing. I assume they will use their custom chips for their upcoming headsets. Meta gets their chips from Qualcomm, and they have to depend on Qualcomm for updates to the chips. Qualcomm chips are also more of a general-purpose chip to fix all types of VR headsets. Apple’s chip can be custom-built for their specific hardware. Meta has done a good job with the XR2 chip, so only time will tell how much of an advantage Apple can get with a custom chip.
