Virginia Tech Becomes Latest College to Drop Legacy Admissions

Virginia Tech drop its legacy admissions policies, becoming the latest in a series of colleges to do so, and is shaking up the college admissions landscape. In a recent announcement, administrators revealed that they will no longer consider alumni connections as a factor in their admissions process.
Virginia Tech stated they have been slowly moving in this direction for years. However, legacy students still comprised of over 20% of the incoming class.
But that’s not all — the university is taking additional steps to foster diversity and inclusion. Virginia Tech is bidding adieu to the early decision admissions option (a binding commitment that some argue favors students with more resources and support) and will also abide by the Supreme Court’s ruling on considering race in admissions. The university aims to remove barriers to admissions, offer effective pre-college programs, and provide unwavering support to students during their college journey.
These changes are set to take effect in the 2023–2024 admissions cycle, and they promise to level the playing field for all students, regardless of their background or household income.
Legacy admissions have come under scrutiny, with critics arguing that they favor applicants with family ties to alumni and perpetuate inequality. As the spotlight intensifies on this issue, Virginia Tech’s decision is sending ripples through the higher education landscape, and may signal other colleges to soon follow.
