Monterey Bay FC started the 2025 season on fire, going 4–1–1 with 11 goals scored in their first six games. Since then, they have managed three draws and two losses, with only two scores. It’s far from a collapse, but what has transpired that explains the change in fortunes?

Clubs are learning how to handle them

MBFC did an about face to start the season, pushing a possession based attack replete with a gambling defense that relies on communication, deft switching and a dash of good luck to thwart opponents. The defense has remained staunch throughout, relinquishing just 10 goals, including only two matches where the opponent has netted more than one.

Where opposing teams have made strides is figuring out ways to throw a major wrench into the Monterey Bay attack. Clubs have had great success in getting the Seasiders off-balance by pressing them up high and effectively shutting off consistent passing into the final third.
