Just when you thought this all-time great NBA offseason could not possibly get any crazier.

After this week’s shocking trade sending Kyrie Irving to Boston in exchange for a package headed by All-Star Isaiah Thomas, it seemed that all of the summer’s NBA noise would finally go away. Obviously, that was not the case- per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers are apparently now worried about the results of IT’s physical, specifically the hip injury that bothered him throughout last year’s playoffs.

There are a handful of possible resolutions to what is happening here. The most obvious one, as unlikely as it seems, is for the Cavs to give Thomas and his injury concerns the benefit of the doubt and follow through with the trade.

But when the Cleveland Cavaliers are put in an adverse situation, it’s never smart to expect things to go smoothly.

The most likely scenario seems to be that the Celtics will have to throw in extra compensation in the form of a draft pick or two- whether it be a few second-rounders, or a low first-round pick. It may be a bit machiavellian, but the Cavs leaking “concerns” to the media and threatening to pull out of the trade to get more value back for Irving would be the most brilliant thing they have ever done.

Cleveland claiming they have deep concerns about Thomas and his hip, real or not, puts the Celtics in a very awkward situation. Many would say that they already got the raw end of the deal, it wouldn’t be wise of them to add any more significantly valuable pieces to the deal to satisfy Cleveland. But, they can not let this trade fall through and attempt to bring back a disgruntled Isaiah Thomas. There is no turning back, Isaiah Thomas must be dealt before the season starts.
