College football is nearly at the mid-season mark and it’s been an interesting season to say the least. Conference games are just starting to heat up, which will bring up some huge games with teams trying to secure their spot in the playoff. My top ten rankings are below through week five:

  1. Alabama

This team has dominated every team they have gone up against. Their last two games have been against Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss. Bama has won those games with a combined score of 125–3. You read that right. Not to mention they have one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the country with Jalen Hurts. He has thrown for 747 yards and six touchdowns, along with rushing for 461 yards and four TDs. The team will get a test this weekend at Texas A&M, but it should be no problem.

2. Clemson

The Tigers have some of the best wins of the season, including beating Auburn at home, then on the road against Louisville and Virginia Tech. The rest of their schedule is a cake walk. playing only one more top 25 team (#24 NC State). Their conference championship game will matchup likely with Miami, their final test before the bowl season. Clemson seems destined to be in the playoff to defend their title.

3. Oklahoma

With arguably the best win anyone has had this season with beating Ohio State on the road, this team is rock solid all around. Baker Mayfield is the best quarterback in the country and one of the front runners for the Heisman Trophy, leading his team to victory week in and week out. Eyebrows were raised two weeks ago when they almost lost to Baylor who has become the laughing stock of the Big 12, but with the bye week last week, their focus should be back. Their schedule picks up, still yet to play Oklahoma State, TCU, and West Virginia.

4. Washington

The Washington Huskies is the team in college football that no one is talking about. I first put this team all the way at #3, but Oklahoma’s win at Ohio State was the deciding factor. Blasting every opponent they have played so far, the conference schedule brings some tricky games for the Huskies. They are left with Arizona State, Stanford, Washington State, and Utah to name a few challenging games.

5. Penn State

The Nittany Lions have the best player in the country with Saquon Barkley. Every time he gets the ball in his hands you know something special is going to happen. They have a grueling month coming up with Northwestern, Michigan, and Ohio State the next three weeks. You could argue that they have played an easy schedule so far, their best win is a two point victory at Iowa.

6. Michigan

Michigan has possibly the best defense in college football at the moment. And you know what they say, defenses win championships. Well, not quite. Michigan has some serious work to do on offense to win a championship. The offense has been anything but spectacular. Wilton Speight left the game two weeks ago against Purdue with an “undisclosed injury” Harbaugh said. John O’Korn will start this weekend for the Wolverines at home against rival Michigan State. They throttled Florida the first week of the season which was a solid win to open up the season. They travel to Penn State on October 21st.

7. Georgia

The Bulldogs lost star quarterback Jacob Eason in their opening game and he has not returned since, but that has not been a problem. Jake Fromm, a true freshman, is having an outstanding start to his career. His first game as a starter he went into South Bend and left with a victory. They have dominated since then, blowing out Mississippi State and on the road against Tennessee. Georgia might just be the most athletic team in the country, and the team is thriving under a freshman quarterback. There is the possibility Eason could suit up and start this week, which is a big decision for Kirby Smart. Looking at their schedule, they could possibly run the table heading into the SEC Championship, but we will have to wait and see.

8. Ohio State

Yes, I am putting three Big Ten teams in the top eight, as they are the best conference in football. With an embarrassing loss at home to Oklahoma, the Buckeyes seem to be heading back into the right direction. With senior J.T Barrett at quarterback, they seem ready for one last run at the playoff with him at center. Still with Penn State and Michigan on the schedule it will be a tall task, and Urban Meyer knows it. But, don’t count the Buckeyes out yet.

9. Washington State

After a late night victory Friday night against USC, the Cougars confidence is at an all time high. With a perfect record at 5–0 this team deserves to be in the top ten at the moment. Luke Falk has already thrown for over 1,700 yards, along with 16 touchdowns. Falk is hands down a top five quarterback in the country and he wants more than national attention for himself. He wants the playoff. Beating USC was a step in the right direction. The last game of the season in Seattle against Washington could be one of the ages.

10. TCU

College Gameday will be in Fort Worth Saturday for the big matchup between TCU and West Virginia. So far, the Horned Frogs have had an outstanding season. They beat Oklahoma State on the road which was a huge statement around the nation. This team has scored over 40 points in three of their first four games, and held opponents under ten points in two of those games. It’ll be a battle this weekend between TCU and West Virginia.

Waiting List: Wisconsin, Auburn, Miami
