College Football Top Ten: Week 7

Week seven was full of upsets, and crushed playoff dreams around the country. This was the week college football fans have been waiting for. With big names like Oklahoma, and Michigan getting knocked off. Here are my top ten rankings for week seven.

  1. Alabama (Last Week: 1)

The Crimson Tide continues to prove why they are the best team in the country. They went on the road and handled Texas A&M with ease 27–19. The game was never close, even though the final score said it was a one possession game. Up 24–3 in the third quarter, Alabama let their foot off the gas a little bit. It seems that Alabama will cruise the rest of the way until the final week of the season, when they travel to Auburn.

2. Clemson (LW: 2)

In a potential “trap” game for Clemson at home against Wake Forest, they prevailed 28–14. Much like the Alabama game, no one thought Wake Forest could get the victory over the Tigers. The biggest story of this game was Clemson’s quarterback Kelly Bryant left the game with an ankle injury. Dabo Swinney said he expects Bryant to start this week at the Carrier Dome when they take on the ‘Cuse.

3. Washington (LW: 4)

It’s not rocket science. The Huskies have flat-out owned everyone they have played, including a 38–7 romp against Cal on Saturday. Granted their schedule has not been tough up to this point, but that is out of their control, and I believe they are a top three team. Their defense has improved significantly after last year’s embarrassment against Alabama in the playoff. Washington is still left with Arizona State and Stanford on the road, along with a last week showdown against their rival Washington State.

4. Penn State (LW: 5)

Penn State is playing like the best team in the Big Ten, but how long can they keep that up? Their next three weeks after their week off is going to be almost impossible to stay unbeaten. They play Michigan at home, at Ohio State, and at Michigan State. We will know how good Penn State really is in a few weeks. If they happen to remain undefeated after those games, they may deserve to be number one.

5. Georgia (LW: 7)

The Bulldogs show no sign of slowing down. Since getting a win at Notre Dame, they have outscored their opponents 159–31. Their next true test is on the road against a very good Auburn team led by Jarret Stidham at quarterback. I expect the Georgia defense to continue their stellar play and clobber every opponent until the match up at Jordan — Hare Stadium.

6. Ohio State (LW: 8)

Urban Meyer’s team is playing ticked off, and that is not a good sign to other teams around the country. Much like other teams in the top five, the Buckeyes are rolling over people after their devastating loss against Oklahoma. They have games on the schedule that can set them up for another playoff bid including Penn State, Michigan State, and Michigan. But is J.T Barrett and the offense skilled enough to put points up on the board? Look out, the Buckeyes are not done.

7. Washington State (LW: 9)

Luke Falk and the Cougars are scary good. Many thought Oregon would give them trouble and even upset Washington State, but that was put to rest after a convincing 33–10 victory on the road. Washington State still being unbeaten could mean for a potential thriller on Thanksgiving weekend against the Huskies. It could turn out to be one of the best games of the year. Nothing is for granted as we know in college football, as they still have roadblocks like Cal, Utah, and Stanford.

8. Miami FL (LW: UR)

New to the rankings and even jumping TCU are the Hurricanes in Coral Gables. Winning in a last second thriller against the Seminoles launched them in the number eight slot this week. Is the “U” back? I believe so. This team has athletes all over the field, and are a matchup threat to any team in the nation. Even though their star running back Mark Walton is out for the year, Mark Richt will find the next guy up and keep winning.

9. TCU (LW: 10)

TCU only climbs up one spot in the rankings this week for one main reason: The Big 12 is overrated. Oklahoma had their worst loss in years in Norman against Iowa State. Texas, and West Virginia have yet again been disappointments this year. Don’t get me wrong, TCU is a solid team. But how solid are they? The Horned Frogs did give up 36 points against SMU this year. I am predicting an upset this week as Kansas State knocks them off, and out of the playoff picture. Don’t get your hopes up yet TCU fans.

10. Auburn (LW: UR)

Welcome to the top ten, Auburn. The most underrated player in the nation is a transfer from Baylor Jarrett Stidham. This guy has all the talent in the world, with a good defense to back him up as well. Their only loss is on the road against Clemson by eight points. They will get a true test this week when they travel to Death Valley against LSU.

Dropped Out: (3) Oklahoma, (6) Michigan

Newcomers: (8) Miami, (10) Auburn

Waiting List: Wisconsin, USC, Notre Dame
