College Football Week 0.5: How to Watch CFB’s First Games

No, you’re not misreading that title… College Football is back. Sure, if you had asked the majority of College Football fans, “When’s the first game this season?” the majority of people would likely have said August 31st or September 2nd. But they’d be wrong. Today is the day.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there are no marquee match-ups. And no, Rece Davis won’t flash his toothy smile. And unfortunately for all of us, David Pollack won’t try to prove to us he’s still at playing weight.

But in the end, that’s all tertiary. We’re not here for the flash, we’re here for pure, unadulterated, non-exhibition, American style, non-Aussie rules football. And thus, we have it. Here’s how to watch CFB’s unofficial, marginalized kickoff week.

Oregon St. @ Colorado St.

CBS Sports | 2:30 pm ET

Notes: Is it Bama-FSU? No. But it’s real football. Drink it in. It’s the undercard before the real fight, and sometimes those fights are more entertaining. In the end, CSU should take care of business and begin their yearly run at being one of the more respectable Group of 5 times in football.

Portland St @ BYU

ESPN | 3 pm ET

Notes: I can’t name a single player or coach associated with Portland State… And they’re going to lose big, BUT FOOTBALL.

19 South Florida @ San Jose St

CBS Sports | 7:30 pm ET

Notes: Unlike the other games today, this game is worth watching for a reason other than simply having football on your TV. That reason is Quinton Flowers. He’s a CFB hipster’s dream and a dark horse to go to New York at the end of the year. He does everything for USF (everything), and he’s wonderful.

14 Stanford @ Rice

ESPN | 10:00 pmET

Notes: The “@” can be a bit misleading here, as this is truly a neutral site match-up in Allianz Stadium (Sydney Cricket Ground). Sydney… as in Australia, so that’s dope. If nothing else, this game is worth watching to see a ranked college football team play in Australia.

So there you have it, folks. It’s not necessarily a schedule to shape your day around, but college football is finally back. The prognostication is nearly over, and the games have arrived. Enjoy!
