Jemele Hill Suspended by ESPN

Not for what anyone thought she’d be suspended for.

Well if you’re reading this thinking ESPN SportsCenter anchor Jemele Hill was suspended because of some more Donald Trump tweets you’re wrong. As was I when I first heard of her suspension. My mind immediately went to her tweeting about the president, and then him wasting everyone’s time by getting involved.

But this time Hill tweeted about what ESPN really loves, the NFL and NFL money. In a series of tweets, Hill discussed boycotting vendors and advertisers associated with the Dallas Cowboys.

This was after Jerry Jones decided to make it crystal clear where he stood on the matter of players standing or not standing for the national anthem.

“We as a team are very much on the page together,” Jones said. “We made our expression. I’m very supportive of the team, but under no circumstances will the Dallas Cowboys — I don’t care what happens — under no circumstances will we as an organization, coaches, players, not support and stand and recognize and honor the flag. Period.”

“If it comes between the impression or the perception that we’re not standing together, supporting each other or the perception that we’re disrespecting the flag, the perception that we’re not together will be secondary to not respecting the flag,” Jones said. “Respecting the flag is first.”

ESPN did release a statement on the matter. Hill will be suspended for two weeks. So for those of you that watch SportsCenter still, you’ll be missing one of the most interesting anchors on the show for a bit. We’ll see how this story continues to develop.

If you remember, The Ringer’s Bill Simmons’ departure from ESPN was spurred on by his engaging with the NFL. It’ll be fascinating to see how Hill responds, and if engaging with the NFL this way is the beginning of the end for her at ESPN, just as it was with Simmons.
