Because prices for veterinary care are rather high, many people are opting out of taking their pets to receive the care they need. But why are these prices so high?

The first reason is the fact that staffing is expensive, as people have to be experienced and educated and very few people struggle to fit both criteria. Few people choose to become vets, because the student loan debt is so pricey and people who practice on humans make significantly more money. Therefore, veterinarians are becoming more and more hard to find and grow increasingly more expensive to pay.

Another reason as to why the industry struggles is the height of drug prices. Drugs have to be researched, developed, tested, shipped, and then used. Those make it incredibly challenging to afford. Because of the prices, many pet owners choose to buy these products online, but the veterinary hospitals still have to supply them with low demand, causing them to not make enough money.

The equipment used by pet hospitals are typically shared with human hospitals. This means the prices are the same, and human hospitals have more financial means to afford it than small pet hospitals. Examples of these materials are sponges, syringes, surgical things, etc. Costumers at a pet hospital are likely expecting a lower cost than if they were seeking treatment for a person.

Maintenance for a veterinary care facility is highly priced. To find an affordable location to house the pet hospital is challenging. There are also many restrictions that need to be satisfied, including those that human hospitals have to abide by.

In summary, owning a veterinary care facility provides more challenges than most people might think.
