We all share interest in mainstream talent, however, we tend to forget that talent lurks in our own streets. Local artists are just as inspiring and often times more relatable because of how close they are to home. In the hopes of uplifting the culture in Greater Boston, supporting local talent is very important. Whether it’s music, film, or fashion, local talent is blossoming, so lets see what Boston has to offer!

  1. JPRiZM

Having many titles under his belt — artist, producer, DJ, songwriter and culturalist — JPRiZM solely describes himself as a creator. When listening to him, you can expect beats that make you want to move and very peaceful vibes. Mindwalker, his 2014 debut, was named one of the top 50 hip hip albums by CJM. In his 2017 EP, Waves, he introduces his shift from hip hop to the electronic music scene. Despite his transition to electronic music, JPRiZM still produces hip hop tracks for many artists. Check out more of his music on Soundcloud!

2. Andrea Wolanin

Honorary filmaker, Andrea Wolanin has been making horror films since she was 8 years old. She describes herself as a “storyteller with a love for gore, terror, perversion, and women who kill.” Since her first film, Pool Party Massacre, her work has received awards such as: Best Director, Best Short Film, Best Horror Short, and Runner-up for Best New England Film. Andrea has definitely created some local buzz for herself recently. Check out Andrea’s work on her website where more of her work will soon be released.

3. HipStory

HipStory is a media brand focused on centering marginalized identities through music and film; and includes BAMS Fest’s very own, Tim Hall. Also included in the lineup are artists Oompa, Cliff Notez, Forté, Hamstank, and VQnC. Collectively, their main goal is to redefine the future history of Hip-Hop; individually, their talents expand into lyricism, poetry, music production, film making, and photography. The group just returned from their summer tour that started in New England and ended in the extravagant city of New Orleans, and officially culminates with a performance on July 29th at Zumix in Boston. As the group progresses, they hope to sustain the content they have produced with the cultural roots of Hip-Hop. Learn more about HipStory on their website.

4. I AM Kréyol

I Am Kréyol is “a woman’s high fashion brand whose aim is to teach a woman how to fish.” The brand works with Haitian women by giving them the skills to create garments, thus, elevating their economic standing. Utilizing the fashion world, I Am Kréyol is a movement that inspires and enlightens women abroad and teaches them to use their own strength. Using fashion as that spark, this brand is internationally spreading its vibrancy one purchase at a time. Take the time to support their events and learn more about this socially conscious brand.

This list is just a small sample of the local talent that celebrates the culture of the Greater Boston community. We aspire to show you, our supporters, the talent that surrounds you, so be sure to follow BAMS Fest on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to get updates about local artist we’re featuring or supporting at our events.

As always, visit the BAMS Fest website to learn more about our organization, how you can get involved, and the Boston Art & Music Soul Festival debuting in 2018 at Franklin Park!
