Conquering the Grossglockner High Alpine Road: A Dream Fulfilled

The majestic Grossglockner High Alpine Road, nestled within the High Tauren Mountain range, had long been on our travel bucket list. The previous year’s autumn detour only fueled our determination to conquer this iconic route. During our stay in the charming spa town of Bad Gastein, we finally embarked on this dream drive, accompanied by our son Zak.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road lived up to its reputation, unfolding a panorama of breathtaking alpine scenery. With each twist and turn, we were treated to awe-inspiring views of glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and lush valleys. The experience was not just a drive, but a journey through nature’s grandeur.

Traveler Tips:

  • The Grossglockner High Alpine Road typically operates from May to October (weather permitting). Be sure to check the official website for the latest updates on opening hours and road conditions.
  • Ensure you have a full tank of gas before embarking on this route. There are no gas stations along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, and the next refueling opportunity is on the other side of the mountain.

St. Gotthard Pass: Navigating an Unexpected Detour

The journey from Zurich to Milan held an unexpected twist when a traffic jam forced us to seek an alternate route. Little did we know, Google’s detour would introduce us to the rugged beauty of St. Gotthard Pass, one of Switzerland’s most iconic mountain passes.

St. Gotthard Pass, with its winding roads and dramatic landscapes, presented a stark contrast to the highway we had initially planned on. While visually stunning, the pass proved to be a challenging drive, demanding careful attention and a respect for its unpredictable nature. Upon returning home and researching the route, we discovered its history and reputation as a formidable, yet undeniably scenic, crossing through the Alps.

Traveler Tip: When faced with unforeseen detours, be prepared for unexpected terrain and driving conditions. While diversions can lead to surprising discoveries like St. Gotthard Pass, always prioritize safety and factor in extra travel time for navigating less familiar routes.

A Bavarian Road Trip: From Munich to Stelvio and Beyond

Our Munich adventure began with a rental car, ready to explore the captivating region of Bavaria. Our home base for the week would be Oberstaufen, a charming town nestled in Oberallgäu. The drive there was filled with a sense of nostalgia, as we revisited familiar stops like Ettal, where the sight of Neuschwanstein Castle never fails to inspire awe. Mittenwald, another favorite, added to the charm of our journey.

This trip held a special goal: to conquer the legendary Stelvio Pass. Along the way, both planned and unexpected detours unveiled a series of breathtaking mountain passes. Landeck, Austria, offered a glimpse of its quaint town life, while Curon Venosta surprised us with its iconic submerged bell tower. Resia Pass became an unplanned yet memorable addition to our list of crossings.

Stelvio Pass: An Icon Conquered

Stelvio Pass needs little introduction. Its serpentine curves and dramatic elevation changes make it a challenge sought by driving enthusiasts worldwide. The experience was exhilarating, a testament to both engineering and the raw beauty of the Alps.

Our journey continued towards Davos, Switzerland, with a target arrival time of 8 pm. This route gifted us with even more mountain pass treasures: Umbrail Pass, Ofenpass, and the scenic Fluela Pass. And as a bonus, the next day held a detour to St. Moritz via the picturesque Bernina Pass!

Traveler Tip: Southern Bavaria and the bordering regions of Austria and Switzerland are a paradise for mountain pass enthusiasts. Embrace the unexpected, as detours and side routes can lead to unforgettable discoveries.

A Swiss Detour: Exploring Bernina, Julier, and Albula Passes

Our time in Davos was short but sweet. With an early start, we set off to conquer the Bernina Pass, stopping for a delightful lunch in the charming Swiss town of Poschiavo. The beauty of Bernina Pass demanded a second crossing, this time with a leisurely stop in St. Moritz for a scenic walk and a well-deserved snack. Having experienced the bustling atmosphere of this famed resort on a previous tour, this private visit allowed us to savor its charm at our own pace.

Our adventure continued as we embarked on a scenic loop, navigating the curves of Julier Pass and then Albula Pass for our return journey to Oberstaufen. While the day’s drive proved tiring, especially for my husband behind the wheel, the stunning Alpine landscapes filled our hearts with a sense of wonder and accomplishment.

Traveler Tip: Routes featuring multiple mountain passes make for fantastic road trips but can be demanding. Build in time for breaks, scenic stops, and allow ample daylight hours to fully appreciate the beauty of each pass.

My European mountain pass obsession continues to grow with each new route I conquer. From the heart-pounding climbs to the serene summit views, these journeys have enriched my travels and expanded my perspective of the world. And the best part? There are always more passes waiting to be discovered!!

Keep traveling SMART.
