Firefighters want more measures to be taken after a recent investigation has shown that they are at risk of getting cancer due to contaminated clothing.

The report shows that the equipment used by firefighters can be contaminated by harmful chemicals and cause long-term health issues when used.

The study, which was carried out by the University of Central Lancashire, has called for the government to do more about the exposure that firefighters face.

Gary Jackson, the secretary for Hampshire FBU, said, “Firefighters are exposed right from the start of their shift, through the fire and then especially the aftermath of the shift.

“The design of fire engines and fire stations has not caught up with the potential for contamination”.

Some of the effects of the exposure can cause long lasting health issues for firefighters.

Mr Jackson said, “Principally, it is potentially cancer and it is potentially caused by exposure to chemicals.

“We have also noted that there is a higher incidence of certain other diseases which may be linked to contaminants.”

When asked about what the government can do to help, Mr Jackson said, “I think the government can look carefully at the presumptive legislation.

“No one should go to work and come away from that work less well than when they went”.
