As lockdown eases across the country, Carters Steam Fair is set to offer children a Covid safe experience.

The fair, which is the oldest travelling vintage funfair in the world, is run by the Maidenhead-based Carter family, who have been collecting and restoring rare vintage fairground equipment for the past 40 years.

Joby Carter, owner of Carters Steam Fair, explained that he feels people need to get out for their mental health, “to start enjoying themselves against some semblance of normality”.

“We want to entertain people, this is what we do, it’s been so nice to put a smile back on faces again,” Joby said.

The popular Maidenhead attraction has adapted to the new restrictions by offering children a 30-minute bookable time slot, which includes five rides and a prize from hook-a-duck.

Joby explained that although the new restrictions present “a learning curve” he doesn’t “believe for a minute that there is any compromise on safety”.

Currently situated near White Waltham airfield, the fair will be running Friday to Sunday up until May 9.

Since opening up, Joby says the fair has received a great turnout, and he encourages anyone who wants to come along to book ahead.

Last year Carters Steam Fair successfully raised £10,000 for charity and has since made an appearance on this year’s Sky advert.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the Carters have been able to keep their business afloat by running online signwriting classes and selling merchandise.

Carters Steam Fair will be moving on to Maldon, Essex, later in the month.
