Latest studies show that our planet is going to permanently change for the worse within 12 years.

A report carried out by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted an increase in global temperature and a rise in natural disasters with even greater adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat, flooding and droughts.

It is clear that this generation is getting more involved than ever with an increase in protests, activism and debates around the topic.

Sixteen-year-old activist Greta Thurnburg has become a driving force for opening up the conversation for young people concerning climate change. Her efforts have taken her as far as being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize Award.

We took to the streets of Portsmouth to ask students how they felt about climate change and whether they were doing anything in their day-to-day lives to stop the effects of global climate changes.

We asked whether they had any emotive feeling towards climate change, and if not why?

Jessica, 19, Portsmouth: “Yeah, I’ve read the news and it’s saying we only have 12 years to live and I don’t wanna die in 12 years. It’s quite a scary thought.”

Harry, 19, Fleet: “I don’t really care. The world’s gonna end anyway.”

Harrison, 19, Kent: “I do. I feel like us as humans should look after our globe and the world we live in because we’re only gonna muck it up for ourselves.”

Do they do anything in their day-to-day life to help with climate change?”

Jessica: “Not particularly no, I just read the news I guess.”

Harry: “Nothing. Not even recycling. The world’s screwed, mate.”

Harrison: “Nothing drastically important or effective. I try to recycle, I try to switch the lights off when I leave, just little things to make a difference.”
