Global coronavirus cases have surpassed 40 million, but more concerning is the gradual increase in reinfection rates.

In most cases those infected with Covid-19 will suffer mild non-life-threatening symptoms, and recover from the virus after approximately two weeks.

But since the start of the global pandemic, there have been documented cases of patients defeating coronavirus only to become infected again months later.

In one particular reinfection case in America the second wave was said to be ‘much more severe’.

The 25-year-old male with no pre-existing health conditions was left needing hospital treatment after his lungs failed as a result of complications caused by the virus.

Another reinfection case, this time much closer to home, involved 26-year-old Portsmouth FC defender James Bolton.

Bolton first caught the disease in March but after making a full recovery, tested positive again in June.

Dr Mark Overton, 52, who works as a Rural Generalist in Far North Queensland, Australia, explained: “The chance of becoming infected with Covid-19 twice is still statistically extremely rare.

“However, the reason these cases are so scary is because the more we see of them, the more the utopian idea of herd immunity is threatened.”
