Period pads continue to sell in other UK stores

Supermarket chain Tesco has been criticised for cornering off their sanitary product aisle in Cardiff.

Many customers were unable to access period pads and similar items during the Welsh 17-day ‘firebreak’ lockdown.

The public in Wales are currently unable to buy items such as homeware, books, and children’s clothes.

Local non-essential shops like florists and book stores were told to temporarily close during the firebreak and subsequently supermarkets were instructed to cover shelves with similar items.

Customer and pharmacist Sana Hussain expressed disappointment. She said “Sanitary products are a necessity”.

Customers have taken to Twitter to complain about the service.

Tesco tweeted explaining they were following Government guidelines but then retracted their statement and apologised when it came to light that the period products were covered due to an “isolated incident” rather than a lockdown rule.

The Welsh Government later tweeted: “Supermarkets can still sell items that can be sold in pharmacies.”

Pharmacist Hussain believes this mistake shouldn’t have been made in the first place. “There needs to be clearer guidance, we are in a pandemic and shoppers should be able to access important medical products.”
