Crawley Town star and ex-Ghana international Kwesi Appiah has enjoyed spells at Crystal Palace, Reading and as far as the Indian Super League, but now his attention has turned to life after football — a future in journalism.

The 31-year old has been undertaking work experience with the media team at Crawley Town, as part of his degree course based at Staffordshire University.

Since beginning, Kwesi has commentated on fixtures with the BBC, assisted with the matchday programme, and co-hosted the club’s weekly YouTube show.

He said: “It has been eye-opening to see what actually goes on on a day-to-day basis in a media department, there’s a lot of things that you don’t consider actually happening.”

Appiah explained that the journalism course was two-year accelerated, and since studying, his view on the media has been altered: “Now I understand there is a job to be done!

“Now I am on the other side of the fence, I think more about questions and answers.”

Appiah, 31, has enjoyed a fantastic debut season in Crawley, and is currently top goalscorer for the Red Devils. The in-form forward has played over 200 times during his career.

However, Appiah claimed that he is not as lucky as some, adding: “The guys who play at the top level and earn the money to not have to work after football are lucky and fortunate but for the rest of us it’s about looking at what we want to do after football.

“The media side of football is something that’s always interested me and to be able to dip my toes into it now whilst I’m still playing is fantastic, building that platform for after football.”
