Customers are upset that the Sainsbury’s in North End has permanently shut this week.

The London Road shop closed on October 5, alongside various supermarkets and convenience stores across the country.

The closure came as part of the firm’s plans to lower costs by £500m over the next five years.

Jennie Read, from North End, said: “The store was convenient, the overall prices were reasonable, and I’m going to miss it.”

For many customers, the store shutting means more hassle when buying groceries.

Martin Jennings, from North End, said: “I was sad to hear that the local Sainsbury’s was closing.

“It means a longer trip for me to go shopping.”

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said that all colleagues had been given the chance to redeploy to different jobs in the area.

However, some traders are concerned about the state of the high street due to the supermarket closure.

Sainsbury’s plans to open approximately 120 grocery stores nationally as part of their reorganisation.

The company is also closing another 60 to 70 Argos stores as part of arrangements to move them inside their supermarkets.
