My first time back in a Vue cinema, sitting alongside my large popcorn and Tango Ice Blast, preparing to watch Dune: Part 1.

The science fiction film, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is set in the very distant future where humanity and science, to say the least, have both dramatically advanced.

My favourite aspect of Dune: Part 1 is a tight call, for two reasons.

Primarily, Jon Spaihts’s astounding screenplay in which he perfectly portrays the different factions exactly how one may imagine advanced civilization to be in the future.

Secondly, the astonishing cinematic experiences that Villeneuve provides you as an audience, which remained with me long after the ending credits of the film. Experiences such as brute armies with gigantic spaceships, technologically advanced weapons and an autocrat villain.

To summarise, for those of you who have not yet watched Dune Part:1 yet, it is all about the main character Paul and his family. Featuring House Atreides, who are forced into a war for the desert planet Arrakis, between the native Fremen people and the enemy invaders, the House Harkonnen.

The casting, sound design, acting, costumes and the list goes on — everything was chosen with such obvious care for detail and it really did pay off.

In particular, credit must be given for the ensemble of famous actors blessing our screens within this film, such as Timothée Chalamet, who plays Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson, acting as Lady Jessica, and Zendaya playing the role of Chani.

If you are not a science-fiction-film person Dune may not be for you; personally I am a secret sci-fi fanatic, but I did still struggle slightly to keep up and understand what was going on at some points within the 2-hour 35-minute-long film. I’d say this was down to the film plot at some points being somewhat complicated.

With a personal rating from me of 4.5 stars out of 5, I highly recommend it — if you have a few hours free in your day you go give it a watch.

I look forward to seeing how the sequels portray the characters we haven’t met yet and how the main character Paul will change as he grows into a man within Dune Part: 2.
