Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority Chairman Chris Carter said: “The new CFA would offer operational benefits and greater resilience while giving the taxpayer even better value for money. It would strengthen the relationship and bring us even closer together.”

A 12-week public consultation was initiated last year and after 311 responses, 53% of them were supportive of the merger.

Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Member Tig Outlaw says that this is an opportunity to achieve what is best for Isle of Wight and Hampshire residents and ensure the future resilience of the service.

“It is important to remember that this is not a merger but if approved by the Secretary of State, it will be a completely new authority.”

He explained that the new authority will cover the four authorities of Isle of Wight, Hampshire County Council and the City Councils of Portsmouth and Southampton.

This will allow them to pool together their resources creating a safer environment and reducing expenditure.

The final decision will be made by the Home Secretary.
