Dating and hookup app Grindr was launched 10 years ago, changing the world of online dating ever since.

The gay dating app was launched on March 25, 2009, and for the first time offered an app which allowed users to see how far away potential partners were.

This function preceded the likes of Tinder, Chappy and Bumble.

Today Grindr estimates it has over three million users across around 200 countries every day.

The app allows men to upload a photo of themselves, a short biography and then allows them to message other men in their local area.

However, it has not been without controversy in its 10 years.

The app has had issues of racism with users including phrases such as ‘no Asians’ or ‘no Blacks’ in their bio, leading to the KindrGrindr campaign.

And in 2016 serial killer Stephen Port was jailed, having used the app to meet his victims.

Despite the controversy it is still one of the largest dating apps being used in 2019 and often cited as the app which changed online dating for many.
