The Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth, has played host to many different bands over the years. But this year they celebrated Guy Fawkes Night with a high-energy gig from the young, up-and-coming local band — Hallan.

The Edge of the Wedge being the smaller room at this venue, it was already guaranteed to be a sweaty night. The band was loud and chaotic, controlling the stage. It took a few songs for the crowd to start getting into it, but the atmosphere suddenly changed to mirror the dancing and singing that was happening in front of them.

Hallan’s unique sound of post-punk and indie music rocked the entire room and there didn’t seem to be one person in that room who wasn’t enjoying themselves. Whether that was down to the alcohol on offer or the music, we will never know, but I imagine it was a bit of both.

Nevertheless, the frontman Conner, almost shouting down the mic, was really giving it his all. His voice was strong and grungy and really suited this kind of smaller venue. The two Joshes on guitar never missed a beat and provided strong backing vocals to emphasise their lyrics at every opportunity. But the one who really stole the show for me was the drummer for the band, Adam. His presence on stage, although sitting down, was huge.

The last song on the setlist was called Night Out. Being the first time they had played the song live, you could really feel the excitement of showcasing new material. But that song was all about Adam. The sound of him slamming the drums echoed around the room — and I don’t think there was one set of eyes that wasn’t set on him at that time.

The only issue I saw with this great performance was the sound man. Although not the band’s fault, it really ruined the sound of their first couple of songs when every high note was matched by a screech from the amp. Despite this though, by the end everyone was smiling and clearly tired out after an hour of intense music.

Speaking afterwards to one of the organisers, Dominic Bowdery, he explained how Hallan really suit this kind of small venue. “The turnout was amazing and Hallan did a really awesome set.

“They’ve got a great energetic sound for this kind of club.”
