Hundreds of people flocked to Southsea beach as a mini heatwave swept the nation last week.

Temperatures rose as high as 21.2C in some places of the UK on Tuesday — the hottest winter day ever recorded and a massive difference from the same time last year when people were tackling the beast from the east.

The hot weather meant beachside restaurants were a lot busier, and everyone got a taste of what’s in store when summer comes.

A staff employee at Mozzarella Joes, who chose not to be named, said: “We were very busy and had a lot more people than we expected.

“It’s such a change from this time last year when we had all the snow. I much prefer this, and long may it continue.”

One university student took the opportunity to walk along the sea front and make the most of the surprise heatwave.

Georgia Davis, 20, said: “It’s been quite rare to have such good weather, so I didn’t want to be stuck in the house.

“I decided with my housemates to go to the seafront and relax on the beach. I can’t wait for summer now.”
