A Katie Melua cover of Sting’s Fields of Gold is this year’s official Children in Need single.

Melua is the 25th artist to release an official song for the charity, and will hope to become the sixth to claim a UK number one.

Released in 1985, Irish band Clannad’s Almost Seems (Too Late to Turn) was the annual telethon’s first single.

A version of Perfect Day featuring David Bowie, Elton John and original artist Lou Reed then became the first to reach the top spot in 1997, contributing £2 million in the process.

Perfect Day

S Club 7 had two consecutive number ones in 2000 and 2001, and Girls Aloud got in on the act in 2004 with I’ll Stand by You, as well as comedian Peter Kay with his ‘Animated All Star Band’ in 2009.

JLS reached number one with Love You More in 2010, and Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir became the most recent Children in Need chart-toppers with Wake Me Up four years later.

However, 2016’s effort from Craig David only peaked at a disappointing 42.

This year’s Children in Need Appeal Show, which will feature a live performance from Melua, is on Friday 17 November.
