Lego blocks are still top of children’s Christmas wish lists — more than 50 years since they first went on sale, according to a survey.

Letters from boys and girls to Santa Claus were compiled by the Royal Mail, and the legendary building bricks proved to be the most desired gift for the second year in a row.

A recent string of blockbuster movies and special Star Wars sets could be an explanation for Lego’s continued popularity.

But parents could have to fork out hundreds of pounds for sets, with a £649.99 Millennium Falcon proving to be the most expensive on Lego’s official online shop.

Perhaps surprisingly, Lego ranks above bikes, video games consoles and mobile phones on the Royal Mail’s list of the most requested items.

For adults, a separate survey from WalletHub found that Amazon gift cards have proven to be the most sought-after presents, while 30% of people have asked for clothes or electronics.

We took to the streets of Portsmouth to ask shoppers what they are hoping to find under the tree this year:

One shopper told us: “I want a Maserati but I’ve got to learn to drive first!”

Meanwhile, a husband-to-be said: “What I’d like is a brand new Xbox X, but I don’t think I’ll get that because I’m getting married next year so it will be a cheap Christmas for me this year!”
