Although progress has been made, there’s still a long way to go to eradicate the gender pay gap, according to experts.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed women earned £4,994.60 less than men in Portsmouth on average.

The report came as part of a study of the gender wage gap across the UK.

Fareham was the area with the biggest pay discrepancy in the Solent region, with a £10,946 imbalance between men and women.

The lowest gender pay gap was in Havant, with a £4,903.60 difference.

According to estimates by the ONS, the mean gender wage gap in Southampton was 22.0% and 22.8% in Winchester.

Contributing factors to unbalanced pay include ‘the unequal impact of caring roles’ and ‘outright discrimination against women,’ according to the Fawcett Society.

Dr. Emily Yarrow, a lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, said: ‘Many organisations know about their gender pay gap, but are stuck at making effective change.

‘Companies should cultivate organisational culture that ensures men and women are equally rewarded, and provide flexible working options.’

According to the Fawcett Society, closing the gender pay gap in the UK will take 60 years at the current rate.
