Having a pet can increase your social opportunities, improve your mental health and your fitness. However, due to the cost of living these four-legged friends are becoming more expensive than ever before.

Dorothy Ross, 77, said: “If we were to get a dog now, we would think twice. It’s far too expensive. He’s just had an operation and it cost just about three-thousand pounds. He’s part of the family, it would be like giving up your child.

“People can’t afford them. They can’t afford to feed themselves, so they’re not going to afford to feed their animals.”

Not only are pet owners feeling the pinch of the cost of living, but animal charities are feeling the pressure, due to a decrease in the amount of donations they are receiving.

As the situation continues to worsen, soon charities may be left with no choice but to shut their doors for good.
