A local education cabinet member says Philip Hammond’s proposed “Little extras” for schools is a diversion from the real issues facing education.

Portsmouth City Councillor Suzy Horton said: “Obviously something is better than nothing, but I think it is diversional to distract from the real issues facing schools.

“Schools are brilliant, and they do what they can, but they are pretty much cut to the bone.

“For a lot of people the comments are quite insulting.”

Mr. Hammond announced last week during the Budget that schools would be allocated £400m for the ‘little extras’ they need.

However, unions and parents across the country are deeply concerned by the Chancellor’s comments.

Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner described Mr Hammond’s proposal as insulting to parents, teachers and pupils.

In response to the backlash, Mr. Hammond said he hoped the bonus would be welcomed by schools, and this payment was separate from proposed long term funding for schools in the UK.

Portsmouth City Council introduced the Early Years Pupil Premium, allowing children who met the criteria to receive up to £300 extra in funding at pre-school level.
