Slogan of the ‘Get a Grip’ campaign

The ‘Get a Grip’ campaign, which warns parents of future fines if their children take unauthorised absences from school, is facing a backlash from parents.

East Sussex County Council wanted to target parents whose children missed at least three days of the school year.

But a petition urging the council to withdraw the campaign and make a public apology has almost 10,000 signatures.

The petition claims that the name of the campaign is suggestive that parents are out of control and ineffective.

The campaign aims to persuade parents to send their children school with minor illnesses that are treatable through medicine.

We asked parents for their views and one of them stated: “I agree with the law, they should be fined if they don’t send their kids to school.”
