Portsmouth City Council are due to vote on a new motion this week that will question whether to keep or remove animal products, such as meat and dairy, from its official event menus.

Conservative councillors in particular have backed keeping animal product options in a bid to support local farming initiatives around the Portsmouth area, and to promote the use of locally sourced meat, fish and dairy.

However, local plant-based business owners and vegetarian and vegan activists have voiced concerns about the wider environmental impact of meat and dairy production in the city, with some saying that it is the council’s ‘responsibility’ to take action in the midst of the global climate crisis.
