Tesco is looking to eliminate thousands of jobs across the country, targeting meat, fish and delicatessen counters.

The simplified store structure will reduce workload and alter stock management, potentially affecting over 9000 employees — including those in senior roles.

Tesco’s chief executive for UK & Ireland, Jason Tarry, hopes these changes will save £1.5bn by 2020 and keep the store in competition with other leading supermarkets.

“We’re making changes to our UK stores to simplify what we do, so we’re better able to meet the needs of our customers. Our commitment is to support our colleagues throughout.”

With over 20 Tesco stores in Portsmouth, staff have shared their concerns about the change to the structure.

Former employee Alex Saunders, 20, believes job cuts will cause people to feel less secure in their job and those who remain will feel more stretched than they can manage.

Andrea Andrews, 19, a current Tesco employee, said: “Employees will really struggle to try to live, pay for food, bills, young children; all because of the job cut plan… losing hours or even losing their jobs.”
