Portsmouth’s Mountbatten Centre has hosted a major hip hop competition — the UK Hip Hop Dance Championships 2019.

The Hilsea sports centre saw two days of international-level competing, with teams hoping to secure their spot at the world championships later this year.

Over the weekend of February 16, hip hop dance groups travelled from across the UK, with the top five teams from Saturday progressing to Sunday.

One team named Darkside, from Bristol, was placed 3rd — securing a position for the world championships to be held in August.

Daisy Roddick, a member of Darkside, said: “We were ecstatic of our accomplishment and cannot wait for August.

“Last year, we qualified for the world championships as well, it was so exciting to be a part of that.

“We’re proud of our performances from the weekend, we have upped our overall score, meaning the gap between our team and the team in 2nd place is smaller.”

The world championships are to be held in Arizona this year, where Darkside will compete for the hip hop champions title.
