The university’s sports students have been left without a place to ‘booze’ after the beloved union bar on Cambridge road has been closed down.

Sports societies have had to change their routes to the bars and pubs on a Wednesday afternoon as the union bar can no longer provide for their main meeting point each week. The bar is thought to of been closed through the university due to a drop in around 20% in sales over the past four years, and, ironically, students not drinking enough.

Lucy Lee, 20, Sports captain of the universities Hockey ladies 2 team, has said: “I’m so disappointed. Slightly worried about how it will affect the socialisation of the whole hockey club as it was the main place for freshers to talk to other people outside of their team”.

Other nightclubs such as Astoria, have felt the impact on a Wednesday, the evening dedicated to sports, as they have had to increase their capacity by around 250 people just to allow room for the teams that no longer have the waterhole bar as a meeting point.

Lucy added: “In the worst way, it will definitely be societies that will be affected the most . It has put pressure on social secs because they’ve had to organise other arrangements for Wednesday nights”.

The decision was made earlier in the month that the bar was being turned into a more ‘relaxing’ zone for the students, with more seating and tables.
