A new report has highlighted the urgency of tackling global warming — but not everyone is happy with steps that are already being taken to mitigate extreme weather in the UK.

Some residents from Hilsea in Portsmouth are angry over flood defence works in the area, saying it’s not appropriate use of council recources.

The construction of new coastal defences in the north of the city includes building a wall at Tipner Lake, from the Mountbatten sports centre to Hilsea Moat.

Shirley Youd, of Northern Parade, said: “They could have spent the money elsewhere in this time of austerity.

“If it is to last for 100-years then we could have spent this money on the needs of today and built the walls when money is more forthcoming.”

The seas around Portsmouth have recently been dredged to allow bigger ships to enter the harbour, namely the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth that was, until recently, based in Portsmouth.

“They dug the sea to let the big ships in and then built high walls for flood defence. It doesn’t make sense,” said Shirley.

“This money could be spent on schooling, social services and to stop the need for people to visit food banks.”
