A Portsea tower block has seen an increase in anti-social behaviour, leaving residents worried for their safety in their own homes.

Sarah Robinson House, in Queen Street, has seen ongoing drug, violence and antisocial behaviour incidents in the past few months which has led to an increased police presence across the building and surrounding streets.

Brenda Tregarthen, the chair of the Portsea action group that campaigns for important issues within the area, said some residents have been left “frightened” to leave their homes due to concerns.

The tower block sits in Queen Street next to York Place

“One of the ladies I talk to lives on the bottom floor, and I’ve been saying not to let the fear get to her like that. But there’s a lot of fear in the elderly,” said Miss Tregarthen.

“They’re saying if it keeps happening during the night and everything 24 hour protection will be put on it, but it’s not just that it’s all about what’s been going on. It’s just getting out of hand.”

Miss Tregarthen said that she hoped the police being more active in the area would help decrease any incidents.

She added: “We’ve had enough it’s been going on a few years, it’s been getting bigger and so this is the sort of thing that we’ve been discussing at the PAG.”

Hampshire Police recently held a meeting for residents to address residents’ concerns. They have said that the police presence will be continued with an aim to disrupt future antisocial activities and they will continue to work alongside the residents and the council.

The force asks anyone that witnesses a crime in the area to report it by calling 101 or 999.
