Residents of Portsmouth feel they have been let down by the council as snow and icy conditions return to Portsmouth.

With snow falling across the city yesterday evening, in some untended areas, the snow quickly turned to ice.

Local landlord Steven McCrudden, of Dunbar Road, Southsea said that the council aren’t doing enough when it comes to gritting residential areas in the city.

“The council tend to be reactive rather than proactive.”

“If ice appears on streets then they will come out with gritters and start sorting it, but this is only after the ice has appeared.”

“Where I live there’s a lot of elderly people and I tend to see the ambulances turning up when someone has a fall.”

“I don’t know if the council expect householders to sort it out, but if they do then they need to send leaflets out.”

Portsmouth City Council do however say on their website: “If there aren’t any passing vehicle tyres to mix the salt and snow together the snow will not melt.”

Bonnie Diamond, Press Officer at the Met Office claimed that frost and ice could possibly form this evening again with temperatures dropping in the next few days.
