Runners from around the globe are in training ahead of the Great South Run in Portsmouth — the world’s biggest 10-mile race event.

The event takes place over the weekend of October 21 and is sponsored by SimplyHealth. It features a 10-mile run, a 5K race, a children’s race, a dog’s race, food stalls, and other entertainment.

The race has attracted many athletes and celebrities since its start in 1990, including Mo Farah in 2009. This is the 28th Great South Run, with over half a million people taking part, raising over £3.5 million every year for charity.

Ambulance technician, Graham Harfield, is running this year after competing in 1991 in one hour and 30 minutes.

“This year, I’m raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK,” says Graham, 50.

“I’m doing it all in memory of my father and my father-in-law, who both died from dementia,” he added.

Graham will be one of the thousands experiencing Portsmouth’s greatest attractions, including an active naval base, the Spinnaker tower, miles of coast and the Historic Dockyard; home to HMS Victory and Henry VIII’s Mary Rose.
