After a brutal attack on a University swimming society member, students are advised to stay safe after the infamous ‘Purple Wednesday’ night out.

In a press release the committee of the swimming society urge any societies that do take part in Purple Wednesday to be careful and they hope that social secretaries will ‘put significant effort into ensuring everybody is getting home safe from nights out.’

On Wednesday, the 2nd October, a member of the swimming society, who has chosen to remain anonymous, was assaulted in Guildhall resulting in in ‘significant bleeding around the brain’ and having the member rushed to hospital that night. Former social secretary of the cheerleading society Amy Hamer states that she ‘personally did not witness or see anything but has heard about what happened through the warning online.’

Fortunately, the member is okay and will not have any long-standing injuries. Hamer said to prevents further attacks social secretaries should ‘remind people to stay in groups and get taxis home where possible to stay safe.’

We reached out to members of the swim society but they were not able to comment at this time. For more information on student safety you can contact student welfare here.
