With December fast approaching, many studios look to end the year on a high note as they release their new blockbuster films.

Amongst many of the highly anticipated films being released are two very well-known franchises — Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix. With both having suffered from complications (like the entire industry) due to Covid-19, fans are understandably itching to get their hands on tickets for what will likely be two of the biggest films of 2021.

Early projections estimate that Spider-Man by itself could bring in upwards of £185 million on the opening weekend. Which in comparison to last year, is more than what cinemas made in the entire month of December.

2020 proved to be a hugely damaging year for the film industry, with release dates being pushed back and issues with funding for cinemas amidst the changing lockdown restrictions, the road back to normality looked like a long one. Last year saw cinema earnings take a massive hit, totalling just under £300 million over the entire year.

Now putting the eased 2021 restrictions aside, UK cinemas have already hit £600 million in earnings, with an estimated £400 million still to come in this December.

Looking at projected numbers alone it is clear to see that cinemas are well and truly back up and running. People are back in seats eating their popcorn after a tough previous year, as December 2021 looks to stamp its authority as one of the most eventful months in film history.
