Portsmouth City Council and the University of Portsmouth have discussed their shared objective of reducing the number of cars in the city by limiting student parking permits.

Pam Turton, Portsmouth’s assistant director for transport, said: “We work closely with the university on promoting sustainable alternatives, such as the park and ride route.”

Emily Richardson said: “I don’t mind the park and ride if there are security cameras watching the cars… piece of mind if any damage occurs.”

Nikhila Deshmukh urges the council to look at the ratio of houses to parking spaces, to reduce students blocking no permit roads after receiving two tickets in two weeks.

Ellie Ablett has found parking much easier with permits in place. “I could never park. It was a lot of stress.”

This is a problem occurring across university towns and cities in the UK. One student, Ed Behan, suggests that a student permit, capped at two vehicles per household, should be devised.

“That way the council can gauge how many students per year bring their vehicles down and make later arrangements for the wider community with the increased traffic.”
