As the debate over Theresa May’s future as Conservative Party Leader and Prime Minister continues, View reporter Will Brown talks to a local councillor and Tory supporter from Portsmouth about his thoughts on what a leadership challenge would mean for both party and country.

Portsmouth City Deputy Lord Mayor and party loyalist Lee Mason believes the party could lose power if there was a leadership challenge.

Speculation surrounding Theresa May’s capabilities as Prime Minister have been at the forefront of political discussion over the past fortnight, with many convinced a resignation is fast approaching despite the problems this would cause.

“If we seek to replace Theresa May with someone else right now, the calls for yet another election would be deafening,” he said.

Cllr Mason said for Mrs May to hold her position, she needs to restore confidence that was lost following this summer’s snap-election and a successful Brexit could prove vital.

“I have great faith in Theresa May, and there is no natural successor. Uncertainty is the biggest threat. Banks like certainty, businesses like certainty, as do the public,” he said.

“We need to plod on and treat it as business as usual. At the party conference last week, I only heard support for May.

With Brexit negotiations still on the table, stability both internally and externally will be imperative in the testing months ahead”, he insisted.
