As Portsmouth may look to go into the new Tier 2 ‘high’ Coronavirus category in coming weeks, with the city’s infection rate nearing 136 per 100,000 people, Wales has opted for a different solution in its attempts to quell the virus.

The Welsh Government, having been given power by Number Ten to make their own Coronavirus related decisions, has sought to impose a two-week ‘Firebreak’ lockdown similar to the nationwide shutdown in the spring.

The lockdown will begin at 6pm on the October 23.

People will be permitted to leave their house for exercise, food and medical supplies shopping. But employees of businesses forced to close may be eligible to be ‘re-furloughed’.

The UK Government has decided a different ‘three-tier’ approach for England as there are over 55 million people in the country compared to Wales’s three million.

However, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has commended the Welsh Government’s decision to stem the spread of the virus.

Twenty-one-year-old Cardiff University student Sarah Wilcox said: “With the way things have been going recently, some form of lockdown was inevitable… we need to adjust to that accordingly to protect everyone.”

Lockdown in Wales will last until November 9 and could possibly be extended further to control the spread of the virus.
