Today while at the breakfast table of the hotel, my friend pointed out a very peculiar thing. His words and I quote
Dekhna kaise jo wives hain wo apna, apne bachho ka aur apne huband ka breakfast lekar aa rahi hain aur husband kaise setho ki tarah baithe hain (look how the wives are fetching the breakfast for their husbands while they sit like kings)
Looking back at the rest of the hall I could see it. One wife made multiple rounds of the lavish buffet laid out first getting all that her husband wanted and only after the guy and her kids have had their plates full cup of tea filled, did she go for her own breakfast while the husband ate and watched the TV.
For most households this is the norm in the urban setting where most women are able to get a decent education. The situation deteriorates in a rural setting.
When you find the underlying cause it points to a systematic degradation of our true culture through a mix of consistent misinterpretation, total ignorance and male patriarchy. It has over time and constant rot created a divide that will take a huge amount of time to heal. It is this very rot that has made our society a bunch of hypocrites who worship lakshmi & saraswati and have read stories of the impossible women and their achivement but would still prefer a male child. It is this mindset that scares some people of women who are successful in their careers or earning better. It is not a thing of the poor and uneducated, its a practice in the workplace too as seen in this clip.
The problem is we’re trying to create legal solutions for social problems and that is a very wrong approach creating dangerous precedents. Some women are in fact now misusing the very same laws such as protection from dowry and rape to an extent that it is making it further difficult for those who are truly in need.
A social change is the utmost need and I can’t stress this enough. This also means that if nothing more men need to start creating an environment where their own children can see the equality and not just read about it. It’s a very small step but one that is very significant. Here’s an example (Btw this is not an endorsement of ariel) The video in itself however is powerful.
I know it looks and sounds silly, but its always the smallest things that have made the biggest impact. There’s so much more I can write about it but for now I sign off
