The impractical love
Today is the one day which for different people holds different meaning especially in a multicultural country like India. For the young at heart it is the day to spend with their beloved. For some of the other young at heart and singles, it is the opportunity to raise a hue and cry in the name of culture. Speaking of culture, some have given this day the twist and want to celebrate it as the Hindu equivalent of Parents Day for whatever purpose.
If you want my opinion, it is a day that was meant to celebrate love in all its beauty and pay homage to St. Valentine’s but ended up turning into a fully commercialised holiday, one where if you don’t treat your girlfriend/wife, don’t shower her with gifts or don’t take her to expensive places, you’re considered a cheapskate and a poor lover.
Even right now the market of Connaught Place outside is abuzz with heart shaped balloons and Happy Valentine’s day offers plastered nearly everywhere on one hand and people pushing out roses for an insane amount of money on the other.
That’s not even the biggest concerns in this whole thing. It is the fact that people and their love is becoming more and more materialistic by the day. It has become more about receiving of gifts than cherishing love for most people. While love in its truest form is still out there in people, it is under attack from materiality and practicality.
For me love not only means the bonding of a couple but the love shared between friends, love between family members. Today, I urge you to celebrate love in its purest form and while expecting a gift or not maybe a practice, let it not define your love for the person who gave it to you.
Finally on this joyous occasion, my love to all of you, and have a Happy Valentine’s day.
